Senate Bill 1240 — Advanced practice registered nurses

Senate Bill 1240 — Advanced practice registered nurses

by
Lindsay Atkinson
January 24, 2020

Bill description: SB 1240 would allow advanced practice registered nurses to provide a signature on certain forms that currently require a physician’s signature.

Rating: +1

Does it give government any new, additional, or expanded power to prohibit, restrict, or regulate activities in the free market? Conversely, does it eliminate or reduce government intervention in the market?

In Idaho, nurses who have “gained additional specialized knowledge, skills and experience” and meet certain requirements can attain the status of an advanced practice registered nurse. APRNs do not have to work under the supervision of a licensed physician. There are still, however, many instances during which an APRN must seek out a physician to get a certain document signed, due to various provisions in state law.

SB 1240 would allow APRNs to truly provide independent care to patients by granting them the ability to sign these forms instead of having to seek out “the signature, certification, stamp, verification, affidavit, or endorsement of a physician.”
