In a $1 billion settlement, the federal government has resolved 41 cases brought against it by various tribes for mismanaging oil/gas royalties and timber royalties, according to a story in the Idaho Statesman. Among those receiving money is Idaho's Nez Perce Tribe, slated to received $34 million under the agreement.
There are still many cases pending against the government, but Attorney General Eric Holder said the settlement is fair. "These settlements fairly and honorably resolve historical grievances over the accounting and management of tribal trust funds, trust lands, and other non-monetary trust resources that, for far too long, have been a source of conflict between Indian tribes and the United States."
