New website reveals growing Idaho property tax burden
Idaho’s local governments’ taxing districts were collecting almost a billion dollars in property taxes annually in 2010, an increase of more than 27 percent from 2006, according to data available in a new state-of-the art government transparency website unveiled Wednesday by the Idaho Freedom Foundation and its news bureau, IdahoReporter.com. The new site, AccountableIdaho.com (which replaces the OurIdaho.com version), also shows that 219 taxing in Idaho have increased their property tax levies by more than 30 percent since 2006.
The new website also allows taxpayers to examine local and state government spending trends, compare agency spending and review government payroll data. AccountableIdaho.com will be comprised of four categories (K-12, Higher Education, State, and local entities), which will include items like:
- Property tax levy rates for ALL 861 taxing districts from city to cemetery and fire to water districts
- Property tax information also lists amount of property tax given to each district and per capita spending within each county
- Payroll information for all public employees at the state and local levels
- Over 665,000 state expenditures since 2008
