Bill Description: House Bill 247 allows students to use their education tax dollars at an alternative education provider if their public school is closed for at least four weeks.

Rating: +1

Does it create, expand, or enlarge any agency, board, program, function, or activity of government? Conversely, does it eliminate or curtail the size or scope of government?

This bill allows students to take their education tax dollars to an alternative education provider if their public school is closed for full-time in-person instruction for at least  four weeks. Students who need in-person instruction can use these funds to attend a private school, start a learning pod, receive private tutoring or purchase materials for homeschooling, among other options. House Bill 247 uses existing education dollars and has no impact on the general fund. This bill eliminates the government's power to trap students in closed public schools for more than four weeks.

This bill steals money from Idaho Public Schools, which are the backbone of education in Idaho, in times of emergency. Those that can afford private tutors and private school don't need a tax cut. Students that can afford it aren't "trapped" in public school, they have options. How about we get a bill to support only low-income families to fund their education in a state of emergency? The choice for a school to go to online or not in person is to keep Idahoans SAFE, not to destroy educations or "trap" students. Public Schools are doing all they can to create a safe and effective learning environment for students, without much support from the state, as usual. How about we create a bill to cut salaries of representatives that fail to handle pandemics by making decisions based on science, for each death caused by the virus, salaries get cut for each member that doesn't support science research, education, vaccines, or even practice themselves the measures put in place by Idaho Public Health.
