The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it sill cost $1.5 million over the next 20 years to protect the caribou in a proposed 375,500-acre habitat in northern Idaho , according to a story in the Idaho Statesman.
The proposed habitat, which affects mostly Bonner and Boundary counties, as well as some of Washington state, has some local officials upset over the potential fallout. Officials for the counties say that the habitat will hurt their economies, which are mostly based on outdoor activities, such as logging, snowmobiling and forest access.
