Senate Bill 1103

Senate Bill 1103

by
Phil Haunschild
March 2, 2017

Bill Description: This bill calls for school trustee elections to be held on the same date as general elections.

Rating: +1

Does it in any way restrict public access to information related to government activity or otherwise compromise government transparency or accountability? Conversely, does it increase public access to information related to government activity or increase government transparency or accountability?

This bill alters trustee elections in several ways. First, it would align as closely as possible trustee zones and county voting lines to reduce the strain on various ballots. Second, it would grant districts the choice of using trustee zones or general district-wide voting. Last and most important, this bill would schedule trustee elections on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even years, to coincide with the general election dates. Holding these elections, which have produced a very low voter turnout in many counties, on the same day as the general election will encourage voters to play a greater role in this decision-making process and boost government accountability.
