Bill description: This bill will help protect government employees from punishment for reporting government misdeeds.
Rating: +1
Does it in any way restrict public access to information related to government activity or otherwise compromise government transparency or accountability? Conversely, does it increase public access to information related to government activity or increase government transparency or accountability?
This bill adds language to Subsection 6-2104(2) prohibiting the state from taking action against an employee for providing information “involving the existence of any waste of public funds, property or manpower, or a violation or suspected violation of a law, rule or regulation adopted under the law of this state, a political subdivision of this state or the United States.” Similar prohibitions are found elsewhere in the Code, particularly in other subsections of this Section. Adding it in this specific place will better protect employees holding the government accountable for using taxpayer dollars efficiently and upholding the laws, rules and regulations imposed upon the citizens of this state.
