Bill Description: Senate Bill 1054 would increase the tax imposed on bean producers.
Rating: -1
Does it directly or indirectly create or increase any taxes, fees, or other assessments? Conversely, does it eliminate or reduce any taxes, fees, or other assessments?
Senate Bill 1054 would amend Section 22-2921, Idaho Code, to increase the tax imposed on bean producers from 12 cents per hundredweight to no less than 16 cents but no more than 24 cents. This represents a tax increase of at least 25% and up to 50%. The tax rate within this range would be set by "a simple majority or a quorum" of Idaho bean commission members.
This tax (and indeed the very existence of the Idaho bean commission as a government agency) imposes costs that fall on consumers. The tax and the commission constitute government meddling in the market.
