Bill Description: Senate Bill 1002 would reduce the fee for a senior to obtain a standard driver's license.
Rating: +1
Does it directly or indirectly create or increase any taxes, fees, or other assessments? Conversely, does it eliminate or reduce any taxes, fees, or other assessments?
Under Idaho law, most adults may obtain a 4-year Class D driver's license for $35 or an 8-year Class D driver's license for $60 if they wish to drive on public roads. Seniors age 63 and older are only allowed to purchase a 4-year Class D driver's license for the standard $35 fee.
Senate Bill 1002 would amend Section 49-306, Idaho Code, to lower the fee for a 4-year Class D driver's license for seniors to $30 in order to align it with pro-rated cost paid by adults who choose the more economical 8-year license, which is not available to seniors.
While this is a small fee reduction, it helps to partially mitigate the inequity of denying older Idahoans access to the 8-year Class D driver's license.
