House Bill 500 — Electric-assisted bicycles (-0)

House Bill 500 — Electric-assisted bicycles (-0)

Bill Description: House Bill 500 would apply several bicycle-related laws to electric-assisted bicycles.

Rating: 0

Does it directly or indirectly create or increase penalties for victimless crimes or non-restorative penalties for non-violent crimes? Conversely, does it eliminate or decrease penalties for victimless crimes or non-restorative penalties for non-violent crimes?

House Bill 500 would amend sections 49-615, 49-714, and 49-715 of Idaho code to expand references to bicycles to include electric-assisted bicycles, which are not currently regulated under these laws.

These laws require motor vehicle drivers to exercise due care to avoid colliding with bicyclists, as well as to abide by traffic laws.

While expanding these statutes and regulations to include electric-assisted bicycles could expose both drivers and riders to enforcement they wouldn’t otherwise face, it does provide increased consistency in how the law treats traditional and electric-assisted bicycles.
