House Bill 39 — Building inspector certification

House Bill 39 — Building inspector certification

by
Phil Haunschild
January 30, 2019

Bill description: HB 39 would give building inspectors six months on the job before they have to obtain a certification.

Rating: +1

Does it increase barriers to entry into the market? Examples include occupational licensure, the minimum wage, and restrictions on home businesses. Conversely, does it remove barriers to entry into the market?

Under current law, building inspectors must have a certification from the International Code Council or the International Conference of Building Officials before performing inspections.

HB 39 would allow individuals who are hired as building inspectors to work for six months before obtaining certification. The individual would be required to work under the supervision of a certified building inspector until they obtain their own certificate. By allowing individuals to obtain the license after they have been hired, HB 39 would reduce a barrier to working as a building inspector.
