House Bill 195 — Cosmetology school license reinstatement

House Bill 195 — Cosmetology school license reinstatement

by
Phil Haunschild
March 1, 2019

Bill description: HB 195 would allow a barber or cosmetology school that has inadvertently missed a deadline to renew a license to reinstate that license within 90 days.

Rating: +1

Does it increase barriers to entry into the market? Examples include occupational licensure, the minimum wage, and restrictions on home businesses. Conversely, does it remove barriers to entry into the market?

HB 195 would protect cosmetology or barber schools which inadvertently miss renewing their license from facing severe repercussions for their business and their students’ financial aid. Under current law, if a school fails to renew its license prior before it expires, the school could lose accreditation from private organizations and the federal government. HB 195 would provide these schools with a 90-day window after the expiration of the license to reinstate their license retroactively to the expiration date. This would only apply if the school missed the reinstatement inadvertently.
