Private land wolf hunting criticized by Defenders of Wildlife

Private land wolf hunting criticized by Defenders of Wildlife

During the 2011-12 season, hunters and trappers took 379 wolves on public lands in Idaho. Beginning Sunday, July 1, wolves could be hunted on private land. That hunts does not please the director of Defenders of Wildlife, Rocky Mountain region.

He says the combination of the public hunt, which ended Saturday, June 30, and the private land hunt means wolves are targeted "year-round, bringing them one step closer to declaring open season on wolves statewide."

A spokesman for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game says his department wants to see the wolf population reduced, according to a story in the Coeur d'Alene Press.
