After hours of debate Thursday, the House voted down a bill that would allow Boise County to raise taxes without a vote to pay off its debt, according to the Idaho Statesman. The county owes over $3 million plus interest from a settlement awarded to a Boise development firm in its handling of a request for a teen treatment center.
According to proponents of the bill, the idea was for the Legislature to pass a bill so the county would avoid a court-ordered suit with the tax commission, which will now likely be the case. The bill would have allowed the county to increase taxes without a vote with the funds going to pay off the federal court judgment.
