State treasurer will not face charges for use of gas card

State treasurer will not face charges for use of gas card

Ron Crane, Idaho state treasurer, says he is "delighted" with a prosecutor's choice not to pursue criminal charges against him for using a state gas card for occasional personal use.

Crane's office has been under a routine audit for several months by the Legislative Services Office (LSO) and, in the process, Idaho Attorney General Lawerence Wasden alerted prosecutor Bryan Taylor, from Canyon County, of a possible conflict of interest concerning Crane's gas card bill, which totaled $7,900 between 2008 and 2010. Wasden asked that Taylor look into the use of the gas card.

Through this process, Crane has argued that he isn't a regular state employee, but one who is on call all day, every day, and therefore meets with people beyond just work and home.

LSO auditors discovered Crane was using a state credit card to fill up his personal vehicle without documenting travel, a possible violation of Idaho travel policies requiring precise records. The policies also do not allow officials to put state-purchased gasoline into private vehicles.

When the possibility of criminal charges first came about, Crane said he actually saves taxpayers money by fueling his personal vehicle with a state gas card.
