Bill description: House Bill 151 specifies that sled-dog races are permissible under the current legislation that prohibits dog racing.
Rating: +1
Does it give government any new, additional, or expanded power to prohibit, restrict, or regulate activities in the free market? Conversely, does it eliminate or reduce government intervention in the market?
If implemented, HB 151 would ensure protection for all who participate in the sled-dog racing industry. Sled-dog racing is an important form of winter entertainment in some areas, and if it were prohibited it could significantly affect involved communities. For example, Ashton, Idaho has hosted the American Dog Derby for the past 100 years (it’s held this week, Feb. 16-18). To prohibit sled-dog racing would cause that community to lose tourism dollars, and would force the many people who are a part of the event -- from dog trainers to hosts to racers, and those engaged in other supplemental activities -- to lose some of their means of income. Additionally, sled-dog racing has been shown to be safe for the dogs and contestants. (+1)
