Bill Description: Senate Bill 1288 would allow certain specially trained chiropractors to return an athlete in youth sports to play after recovering from a concussion.

Senate Bill 1288 would amend Section 33-1625, Idaho Code, to allow a licensed chiropractic physician to evaluate athletes who have experienced a concussion and authorize them to return to play after they recover. Current law allows other medical professionals to do this but excludes chiropractors. 

To meet the requirements of this subsection, the chiropractor must be licensed under chapter 7, title 54, Idaho Code," and have "successfully completed a state board of chiropractic physicians-approved concussion management education program that includes training in all of the following: comprehensive concussion and other brain injury evaluation, ongoing reassessment of patient, recognition of atypical response to brain injury, implementation of appropriate plan of care, return to activity determination, and referral to appropriate health care provider as indicated."

This bill would remove the unnecessary prohibition against qualified chiropractors evaluating a youth athlete after a suspected concussion and authorizing his or her return to play.
