Across the Idaho Freedom Foundation website, Facebook page and Twitter feed, you’re very likely to see that hashtag today. What does it mean?

As lawmakers gather in the Capitol in Boise today, they’re talking tax hikes, fee increases and more government spending. We’re talking about eliminating Idaho’s tax on your groceries. You know, the milk, cheese, eggs and, maybe, bacon, that feeds you and your loved ones.

It’s a stark contrast.

We’re asking for this for myriad reasons, but let’s lay out a few. First, it just makes sense. Idaho already provides a rebate for your groceries, meaning government keeps your money months on end and gives it back whenever it feels like it.

Second, it’s wasteful. More than 65,000 Idahoans file taxes only to grab the tax rebate, which costs taxpayers an extra $780,000 annually.

Finally, it empowers Idahoans. One of the basic tenets of conservatism is the fundamental belief that individuals spend their money better than the government. It’s true.

Let’s allow moms and dads, grandpas and grandmas and aunts and uncles decide how their money is spent, not unelected bureaucrats in Boise.
