What do you believe is the fundamental role of education?
The fundamental role of education is to teach students how to think critically about the world, to learn from the history of civilizations past and present, how to use logic and reason in order to come to a sound conclusion, and how to use math effectively.
How would you promote rigorous academic instruction and excellence in your school district?
Choosing the correct curriculum is paramount, followed closely by employing teachers that have a strong work ethic and even stronger desire to motivate their students to always strive to be their best. We need to set the bar high and incentivize teachers and students to achieve their best.
How do you define Critical Race Theory? When implemented in school policies and curriculum, do you think Critical Race Theory differs from simply “teaching history?”
Simply put, Critical Race Theory teaches students to see each other based on skin color rather than as fellow Americans. It places ethnicity as the most important characteristic of the person. If the person is white, then they are labeled the 'oppressor'. If they are a person of color, then they are labeled the 'oppressed'. This is not history at all. It is leftist propaganda designed to create division and sow seeds of hatred. We, as a nation need to stop this ideology from being taught to anyone.
How do you define Social Emotional Learning (SEL)? Would you encourage the implementation of any SEL model in your school district? If so, which model and why?
Critical Race Theory (CRT) has been made illegal to include as part of public school instruction in Idaho. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is essentially rebranded CRT. When taken at face value, those terms appear to be positive. Without a clear understanding of their current meaning, they can bring to mind ideas of fairness and cooperation – but that is not their impact on education. Instead, they promote animosity and distrust of other ethnicities, and seed racist ideas in our students. A well-rounded education helps them understand and appreciate the differences between people and how to be a compassionate and productive member of society. Therefore, I am against incorporating political propaganda into our schools curriculum.
How would you respond to the Idaho State Board and Department of Education’s recent dissemination of resources such as the SEL Roadmap for Reopening Schools, which argues that schools should adopt anti-racist practices, focus on social justice, and conduct staff-wide implicit bias trainings? Should teachers be required to attend these kinds of trainings?
I will not be bullied by bureaucracy. As a school board trustee, I am representing the voices of my constituents and the parents of my district. I think we can all agree that there needs to be zero tolerance for racism of any kind, but changing the curriculum to reflect these ideas can be the beginnings of yet another re wording of previously outlawed material. The term “anti-racist practices” is very broad and can be changed to include all types of anti-American concepts in to our schools. Teachers should NOT be attending this type of programming. This is all propaganda from the Marxist ideologues trying to work their views into the minds of our youth. They are trying to ruin the future leaders of this once great nation. I will do my best to stop ALL of this.
Should your school district be required to teach a sex education curriculum? If so, should this curriculum include instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity? Should parents and guardians be required to provide consent before their children participate in any sex education curriculum?
Sex education should be handled by the parents in my opinion, but I recognize the need for children to understand the basics of anatomy and physiology, which some parents may not feel qualified or comfortable having that discussion with their kids. The topic should be focused solely on the basics of reproduction. Sexual orientation and gender identity discussions are designed to create labels and division. Let’s stick to the basics.
How should school districts respond to the Idaho School Boards Association’s recommendation that transgender students be allowed to use the bathroom of the gender with which they identify?
Identifying with the opposite gender does not justify a male student be given unfettered access to the female bathroom. Policies like this will likely lead to sexual assaults in our schools and I will oppose it every time it’s brought up. Again, I will not be bullied by bureaucrats into going against the science that exist regarding DNA. You either have an X chromosome or a Y chromosome. Your gender was determined at conception.
Do you support mask mandates in schools as a COVID-19 mitigation strategy? Do you support implementation of any other policies or practices designed to mitigate the effects of COVID-19?
I absolutely do not support mask mandates. Masks do not stop viral transmission per a CDC meta analysis published in May of 2020. "Disposable medical masks (also known as surgical masks) are loose-fitting devices that were designed to be worn by medical personnel to protect accidental contamination of patient wounds, and to protect the wearer against splashes or sprays of bodily fluids (36). There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza." Here is the link to the published document. https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/5/19-0994_article Also, mask use has been shown to reduce oxygen saturation and increase the chances of respiratory infection due to increased bacterial load in the mask in which one would be breathing through. I would encourage symptomatic individuals to stay home to rest, hydrate and support their immune system in whatever way they see fit.
